Sterling Silver Cremation Jewelry

Stardust Memorials recommends using a polishing cloth or polish specifically designed for sterling silver jewelry. These cloths and polishes are affordable and effective for removing tarnish -- keeping your sterling silver cremation jewelry bright and shiny. To ensure that your sterling silver necklace for ashes stays clean and bright, you should not wear your piece while swimming, showering, exercising, or using chemicals. You should store your sterling silver jewelry in an airtight container or bag or in a soft cloth bag or jewelry box away from moisture.

When you see a product with the .925 stamp, that number means that the material is made of sterling silver. The number refers to the content of pure silver which is 92.5 percent. The remaining 7.5 percent is an alloy metal such as brass or copper. Because pure silver is a much softer metal than an alloy, the inclusion of allows in sterling silver increases the metal's strength and durability. All sterling silver has the same ratio of pure silver to alloy metal.

Unlike sterling silver or silver-plated cremation jewelry, stainless steel does not contain any amount of precious metals. Stainless steel is an alloy metal typically made of iron, chromium, and nickel. It does not rust, tarnish, or scratch easily. It is typically hypoallergenic and requires very little polishing or maintenance. It does not hold the same value as precious metals, however it provides a durable, affordable metal alternative to precious metals like silver.

It is important to understand what tarnish is and is not. Tarnish is a natural reaction that occurs when silver reacts with sulphur-containing compounds in the air -- forming a dark surface layer of silver sulfide. Tarnish is not harmful and is easily removed / cleaned. Well-known tarnish removal products such as Wrights Silver Cream or the Connoisseurs range of products are appropriate to restore your sterling silver urn pendant to its best condition. Tarnish is not a sign of poor quality. Tarnish is not rust. All sterling silver items (silverware, candlesticks) are prone to tarnishing expecially when left untouched for long periods or when stored in a damp or humid environment.

Stardust Memorials recommends polishing your sterling silver cremation jewelry piece with a anti-tarnish cloth, using a polishing compound, and/or simply wearing your memorial piece regularly. Regular wear is the simplest and easiest way to prolong the luster and shine of your sterling silver necklace for ashes as oils from the skin naturally prevent tarnish.
